Back from Vancouver
I’ve just gotten back to Vancouver and there are many observations that I’ve noted. I love the city, but there are warning signs that we must be praying for. Here are a few:
1. Small businesses have a difficult time staying in business in Vancouver - Since I’ve returned once a year, I’ve seen the same malls and buildings but its tenants seem to change quite frequently. By no means am I an expert on this, but does the skyrocketing rental rates have a part in this? Or is it the lack of business incentives? It seems if you’re an entrepreneur you may have a tough time staying alive, but those in a trade will find it much easier to get a stable job.
2. Vancouver is a very spiritually dry place - It seems that Vancouver is becoming more and more a narcissistic society, and it reflects on how it has moved from a state of multiculturalism to one of moral confusion.
3. Weed - rumor has it that East Vancouver has on average one grow-op per street, which means there is a heck of a lot of marijuana being traded on the streets. There are stories where developers have built beautiful neighbourhoods only to find them bought out by people growing their exotic plants. I am scared for this city.
4. World Juniors 2006 - I got my fix of hockey and it was watching the World Junior Championships and boy was it a godo one! For those of you who don’t follow, Canada won 5-0 against the favoured Russians in a very pro-Canadian crowd. The Americans, whom were also heavily favoured, lost the bronze-medal match to Finland. I find this interesting as how these teams play together reflects not only their coaching, but also their cultural differences. The US of A is grown on being very individualistic, with focus on a single person more than the corporate whole. Canada, in contrast, leans to a more corporate thinking than their southern counterparts. I can’t comment on Russia or Finland as I don’t know their cultures very well. However, as you’ll see in hockey, and recently in USA Men’s basketball, individualistic endeavours that place the one ahead of the team will cost you. USA had some amazing prospects playing, but playing together is a different story.
