Back from GZ
Back from Guangzhou with these thoughts:
How does the feel of Guangzhou differ from Shanghai?
I must say I can kind of understand what it feels like speaking Shanghainese in Shanghai. You understand the local dialect and Mandarin. It’s been a long time since my Cantonese has come been useful. GZ has a much more “Chinatown” feel than Shanghai. The people, IMO, are friendlier, and not so much a metropolis.
你最喜欢的广州食品是什么?
双皮奶,冷或者热都好吃。广州的叉烧太好吃了都不想回来。 在上海找到一些好吃的叉烧是不容易。。。
What cultural differences do you notice with GZ that makes it stand out?
One would definitely be “yum cha” time. That’s tea with dimsum. This usually takes place in the mornings and many of the senior citizens enjoy this as a way to socialize to soak in the beginning of the day which usually begins early in the morning.
The Cantonese really know how to eat. In trying to book a restaurant on a regular Saturday we had to call 3 different restaurants that even had a hint of a chance of an opening. I’ve never heard of Chinese restaurants being this booked before! Suffice to say, the Cantonese know how to eat!
那广州有什么不好呢?
我觉得广州的安全感不太好。我有好几个朋友都说广州火车站是太乱。 在那边,我要每一秒好好看着我的背包。
What did you enjoy most being there?
I went down there really to meet up with relatives, of whom many I have never met before. Elderly people have great stories to share especially when it’s about your family. There were awesome stories of my Dad, grandfather, and the hardships and joys of what they’ve experienced. I love the look on their faces when the reflect on things of past, and a gravity comes across their face as if those events had grown to be a part of them. No longer naive, no longer simple, but one of wisdom and hopefully gratitude
You can take a look at more of my pictures that I’ll be updating here.
Oh Shanghai, why are you so cold??????
