To me the most interesting fact is that the #2 item in top “Why..?” questions is “What is the meaning of life?”. Seems like the online community also face these problems. If you click into this item and read on the answers provided, a lot of them list a lot of characteristics, morals. But the question remains what grounds these morals stand on…and if they don’t have grounds then are they worth seeking in their own self?

Thoughts after watching

Post modern aunt movie

It’s been about a month since I went to the Vancouver Film Festival to check out another movie. Obviously, I’m a sucker for a good Chinese movie, and allow me to put the emphasis on sucker. Let’s take Leon Lai movies as an example. I know they’re usually pretty bad, but I watch them in case THIS happens to be the movie that turns the corner. For Leon, I’m still waiting.

The movie is based from a book, The Aunt’s Post-Modern Life, which is also the English name for this movie. It features some serious stars that make very spirited appearances, including Chow Yun-Fat and Zhao Wei. I really enjoyed how they played their characters out in the movie.

This movie started out with a very interesting premise. The story starts out with a lady taking care of her nephew for the summer break and gets tied up with one incident after another. I won’t spoil it for you but by the end, what started as a rather humorous and welcome change for me ended similar to most Chinese movies from the mainland. It is somewhat depressing since it was filmed in Shanghai and I can understand the turmoil many people can go through. But I also realize that there are a lot of tough people out there, and they adjust because they have to.

The synopsis is provided here if you want more info. Other info about the movie can be found at IMDB although I don’t agree the story is about the swindler.

In any case, I want to thank JW and L for taking me out for a fun night out and CONGRATS on the beautiful baby!
