June 13 Thoughts

On Faith:
A quote from a podcast called Catalyst Space on leadersthip training in the Western church today:
“In the American church the church will allow you to prostitute youself if you choose to, they will hire you based on your talent, overlooking all of your character and then when you crash they’ll pretend they never saw the signs. We need to run as fast as your character is deepening, and not as fast as our talent is expanding. When we hire from other churches and go after talent form other place and staff based on resume, we many times circumvent and undercut the process that Jesus Christ implemented in the body of Christ. Many of us have gone from high school to college to seminary, and because of our professional degree we’ve gotten a job in professional ministry and we have never paid the hard pirce of walking with Christ and developing the kind of character that is able to face the spiritual warfare and human conflict that leadership requires.” - Erwin McManus

关于世界杯 On the World Cup:
中国人非常爱看世界杯 (中国的足球其实听懒的。。)。 昨晚过了午夜能听到很多人喊叫,可能是捷克队跟美国队的比赛。 我相信五点早晨也有人大叫可我好几个小时前已经睡了。
China has gone World Cup crazy. I heard screams after midnight after a near miss of what I believe was the Czech-USA match. I’m sure there were more screams by 5am in the morning when some of my friends ended up going to bed after a productive evening of watching the 3 matches of the day, but I was sound asleep many hours before then.

Letters from a Sage

In light of the recent passing of my friend Micah, I’ve begun to realize how few and far between the poets and philophers are of our days. My friend was one of those rare sages, who shared and spoke and passed down the words and poems from people such as this from the ages.

Contemplation and reflection are lost in our generation, fixated on the quick fix and the now. Not to say there isn’t a place from the far-fetched humour of shows like Jackass (that we also heartily enjoyed watching together), but living in the now without remembering the streams of the past, nor contemplating the roads of the future leaves a shallowness replacing the depth that we truly require for our souls.

Got a Lifeline?

Because I don’t think I do. The last two days have been filled with a flood of emotions as I’m beginning to see the fragility of life with close friends. One of which suddenly passed away this last Sunday. Micahwas such a beacon of peace when here was working here in Shanghai. A true family man, who crazily loved his wife and his kids, introduced many of us to the finer aspects of poetry and philosophy without letting his feet leave ground. A true renaissance man, I still remember the spiritual meditations we used to have over flapjaacks and maple syrup. The four of us would sit and savour the richness of wisdom from the ancients of past. I loved talking and listening to him. Great wisdom and humour, this world needs more people like you. Mr. Knapp, you are greatly missed.

One of my best friends here was diagnosed with a hole in his heart today. That is, one of the valves in his heart not fully sealing the flow between two chambers. While he seems to be physically well now, he’ll be needing to go into surgery in the future.

Words can’t express the reality of life that we will all pass away, all on God’s terms. He does direct the rising and the falling of people and of nations. But what matters is whether you’ve encountered the living God in a personal relationship in this world that makes a world of a difference in the next. Check out this English or Chinese site for more info. Peace. I’m outta here.
