Last July I spent a few days hanging out in downtown Toronto, and went into HMV. Now I usually never buy music from HMV because of their relatively high prices, but I was sure there must have been some local music that I wouldn’t have been able to find elsewhere. I asked a salesperson and he referred me to an artist that I’m writing this blog about.

Corneille is a very interesting artist with an even more interesting bio. He first started picking up recognition in France, Canada, and Japan, and now just recently signed with Motown, it’s dreams come true for this Canadian artist.

If you get a chance to pick up his latest album, Birth of Cornelius, it’s definitely got that old school funk/r&b that really makes you want to shake your hips. On the first song on the album, Back to Life, the drums come out nice and warm, and you’ll probably notice in his album insert that much of it was recorded on tape. With just a touch of reverb, makes you feel like you’re lying back on one of those velvet lounges.

A pleasant surprise is that the variety of songs on this album, with a bit of old school, to productions of today’s typical R&B/funk music. Love it. Harmonies aren’t only tight, but thick and warm on tracks such as “Heaven”, and grooves ride on far past the track length on “Man of this World” and “Back to Life”.

If you didn’t “know”-tice from the bio or my blog title, Corneille’s native language is French, the language of his previous albums. And boy….he makes me want to dig up my old French textbooks and learn again. Then again, it doesn’t hurt that he’s got a voice smoother than a glass of Ballantine’s on the rocks. His recording and production team did a great job of capturing his voice.

Today I had a chance to find some of his videos online, for your viewing. The first one is of him on French Idol (or something similar), singing his best selling song to date with a pretty contestant named Lucie. He also plays with James Blunt on another, and I’m sure you’ll be hearing more from him soon…

Review: 4/5 – great English language coming-out album that brings a little more sophistication and class into the R&B and funk arena.

After two months of hard sells from my friends about this new movie that they’ve recently watched, I had a chance to sit down and watch it. And I was not disappointed.

I’m not going to summarize this movie as you can find it here and through other sites, but I’ll give you these thoughts: If you’re a singer, songwriter, music lover, and romantic at heart, this is a must watch. I can’t believe a movie like this had escaped my viewing for so long.

Guy and Girl have great screen chemistry, and even better songs. The down-to-earthness of the two of them really remind me of my good friends goin’ for it with their pursuit of music, and the passion and desire to see the realization of those dreams.

The picture of what I had in mind of a singer/songwriter get together was done to the tee in this movie. Lots of eating, drinking, laughing, and reverence during song sharing. This begs the question, that I should be starting something like that here in SH…

A’ite, go watch it, and then tell me if you also thought the blue hoover was also very cute!

P.S. You can check out my friend’s review here. He’s a much better reviewer than I am.

I just received an email update from the people behind Radiohead’s new album release, saying that they’ll be sending me my authorization code for downloading their new album. That’s right, 160kbps, and DRM-free. If you haven’t heard, Radiohead had finished their contract with EMI and have gone independent (whatever that means nowadays). With their upcoming album, In Rainbows, they’ve been offering it for download for whatever price you want to name!! What in the name of lunacy has possessed them to do such a thing????

If you’re still on 8-tracks, let me help enlighten you. Converting music into a digital format has made it easier to duplicate music and to distribute it with a click of a the mouse. In our digital age, music has become a commodity and some even say our generationbelieves music is free. This sudden shift in consumer thinking and demand has left the music industry reeling as CD sales have plummeted while music downloads are estimated to have gone from nil in 2003 to 53 million in 2006.

Interestingly enough, Radiohead’s publicist has said that initial totals from their pre-sales have shown that they are making close to what a typical album would regularly make. Seeing that they’re Radiohead and they’ve got a massive fan base, it would be hard to generalize that this case will work for everyone. With a large percentage of their listeners as being in the 25-40 age group, it also makes online distribution that much easier. But what we’ll see overall are shifts in the traditional music label’s modus operandi, in that they’ll need to learn to embrace digital to continue to thrive.

I’m not a big Radiohead fan (at least not yet from what my friends are telling me), but hey, for a couple of bucks I can download it and get a legal copy that I can share with my friends, I think that’s awesome. But if they’re able to make this money on this first album, then great! However, music listeners today have a concept of value in mind when they’re purchasing, instilled by years of CD sales. But in the future, when the next gen of listeners no longer go to store to buy albums, how much will they decide the value of an album to be?

Just in, Oasis, Jamiroquai, and Nine Inch Nails has followed Radiohead’s lead and have dumped their label in what is becoming an interesting trend on how bands are communicating with their fans.

On the way to Mint’s last concert at Yuyintang last Saturday night, a friend asked the question, “What in the world did they start this the singer/songwriter genre?” His question was met with a few seconds of silence before a host of sarcastic responses filled the air. My response was, “Well, it must of been when Brittany Spears started performing.”

But from what I gather, those artists who get put into the singer/songwriter genre have music that can sound folky, even bluegrass, and almost always requires a decent guitar. Perhaps you can depict them with a guitar slung across their back, traveling from a performance at a stadium venue to one at a coffee bar. That’s the other thing too, that singer/songwriters are almost like hidden treasures, not meant to be popular nor polished. In fact, that’s the attraction of them, in that they’re imperfect, unlike most contemporary pop music which requires big time processing to make them sound perfect. Okay, it’s not that singer/songwriters can’t have polished productions, it’s just that they shouldn’t give off that feeling.

Onto names. Joni Mitchell fits into this category. I like Over the Rhine. Know any new singer/songwriters you can recommend?

More info on the singer-songwriter genre can be found here.

Well, it’s finally online. That’s right. My buddy T. Kao’s put a handful of his songs online for your listening pleasure.

For those gear freaks interested in knowing what we used to put together the four songs on there right now (Sunday Morning Sleeping, Beautiful World, Simple & True, and the infamous unnamed track), there were:

pieces and parts recorded in Garageband and ProTools

different guitars parts using diff. amps, Pod effects, mics, mic configurations (special thanks to J. Hsu for lending us his Martin!)

portions recorded at my place were done in my dining room and living room

synth sounds were done in Garageband and also through Propellerhead’s reason

Other sound effects that were done consisted of various ProTool plugins (including Sony Oxfords for Simple and True, and Vinyl Scratch for Sunday morning sleeping), Reason, sound bytes from different places.

It was super fun cutting my teeth with his music, because it had such variety of instruments, and found out a lot about what works and what didn’t.

I had a great time working with T. Kao with all these songs. If I wasn’t so darn busy, he would’ve been living at my place right now. I hear Mie sighing with relief.

Go listen.

Over the last year or so, I’ve heard so many of my friends turn their focus of music interest from your typical mainstream pop towards more independent folk/rock music. Perhaps it’s partially the group of friends I hang out with but the reality is that once you’ve figured out how pop music is systematically churned out, there’s an urge break free from the monotonous music made mostly with bells and cymbals but with no content. So two weeks ago, my good friend highly recommended a group by the name of Over the Rhine (OTR, for short). And trusting his taste in music, I purchased their Ohio album, a double-CD album that has left me wondering where I’d be without it.

Good songs don’t invent new melodies, but puts skin and flesh to the ones that we have subconsciously known all along. And that’s what Karin Berquist & Linford Detweiler do so well, over and over and over. Melodies that haunt and linger for days after you’ve listened. You can listen to it and fall asleep, and you can listen to one song over and over again to try and understand the meaning behind the song.

I had my doubts when I first purchased it, because folk/rock/country genre isn’t my thing, but after listening to it a few more times, the melodies and words begin to permeate your mind and echo in your head long after you’ve turned off your iPod. Unlike most albums that have 2 or 3 hit songs, this album doesn’t really have any “radio friendly” songs, but the content and presentation of so many beautifully written songs together sets them apart. It has been a long time since an album has kept me intrigued for so long.

I haven’t even started about her voice yet. Karin’s got a touch of Sheral Crow, Sixpence, and more, rolled into one set of vocal cords. What i really enjoy about listening to her is are the inflections she so musically blends with the lyrics. And like the accompanying instruments on the album, they’re understated, leaving room for the audience to draw their own conclusions without having it shoved down our throats. The recordings aren’t rigid, and flow very naturally from one note to the other.

So in conclusion, go have a listen. You won’t be disappointed. And you might have Karin haunting your mind as well.

Rating: 4.5/5 – This album has more magic than Harry Potter. Definite keeper.

For more reviews of the album, check out their website.
You can also hear some of their songs on myspace and youtube (search for them)

Sunday afternoon was my first time worshiping at Brooklyn Tabernacle and what a wonderful time it was.

As most of you reading this know, BT has been known for many years around the world for their amazing choir. To be there in person confirms that and more.

BT has begun a gospel celebration series that sees various contemporary gospel artists come and lead worship on Sunday afternoons. This week happened to be with Larnelle Harris, a multi-Grammy award winning artist. Service began with BT leading worship and it was very, very easy lifting our praises to the Lord.

当Harris 弟兄来带的时候，他是把力量和歌唱并在一起。他唱的时候真的相信他所唱的歌。 这样唱法给我们很大的鼓励和信心。如果无心来唱，可能变成一个普通的演唱。
When Mr. Harris began to lead, he led with such power beyond just singing some songs. Not wanting to use this commonly-used phrase, but he truly believed what he sang. And that made all the difference in lifting our spirits and hearts. Not only being unbelieveably musically gifted, he enabled it with his faith to do far more than what just singing alone can do.

在礼拜结束时，Cymbala 牧师分享了诗篇50章，呼招我们回到他怀抱中。合唱团也唱了一首新歌给大家，也让感到祝福。我之前有没有跟大家说他们的音乐家超厉害？？？
At the end of service, Pastor Cymbala shared a quick message on Psalm 50, and encouraged those that have been distant from Him to come back. The choir sang a new song that led us into His presence and many were blessed. Did I need to add that their musicians at their church are super talented?

觉得最大的鼓励是发现他们的合唱团不是他们教会的重点， 而且他们很热心去帮贫穷的人，也在他们的影响中把福音好好使用在他们的社会。可是他们的服事都是在祷告里建立的。 太酷。
Probably the most encouraging thing is that the choir is not the centerpiece of the church. If it was I’m sure it would not have lasted very long. Community outreach into the city, social awareness and assistance are other key pillars of this church, all built upon being a house of prayer.

Having so many colleges in the city doesn’t hurt, and with Berklee around it definitely helps develop some current stars (for instance, Diana Krall has attended in the past).

Friday night was an experience as my friend Louis helped book tickets to the 10pm performance of the Ron Carter Trio. Made up of Mr. Carter playing the double bass, Russell Malone playing the guitar, and Jacky Terrasson on the ivories. Each of these three are able to hold their own solo shows but having them together was a treat.

Without the drums, each of them have had to help comp and keep rhythm, and it’s quite impressive to hear the fullness of their sound. I can’t tell you how amazing they are comping for one another, not to mention the times they take turns improvising. Unfortunately I’m horrible at recognizing the pieces that they played. The only one I remember was Autumn Leaves.

It was a great show, albeit it felt really short. Then again, when you’re so caught up in something, time can really fly.

I’ve mentioned in a previous post somewhere that I’ve been helping a my friend Tim record a few of his original songs. As great as a songwriter he is, I personally think he’s an even better performer. Last Friday, Tim held a special farewell concert for his students and invited a handful of guest stars to perform with him. And what fun when I was invited to be a guest musician!

It was an interesting mix of people in the audience that Friday night, with school kids from elementary to high school, couples, young families, locals, school teachers, and giddy schoolgirls wanting his autograph, the show went on without too many hitches. Best move Tim pulled off was to hire a professional team to do the sound. The venue he played in is notorious for poor sound and Friday night sounded….Gooooooood.

Finally had the chance to use all this equipment that I’ve hauled from overseas to its full potential. I can say, my 2nd week of June was complete. I played electric for one song and bass for another, using my ES-335 with my Valvestate, and finally, the Acme Bass Amp that was turned up to half of max volume for the first time! Yes, I was one of those giddy schoolgirls.

All in all, it was a fun one-and-a-half hour show, with entertained friends and HK style food for late night dessert. I consider that a night well spent.

A friend of mine turned me onto this artist by the name of Ryan Adams. You may have heard him do a cover of Wonderwall, but the lead singer of Cardinals has also released many solo albums featuring songs that have been lingering in my head. Mind you, I’m glad I’ve got friends with various musical tastes that let me hear different artistic creativity that I wouldn’t normally listen to.

For starters, “She Wants to Play Hearts” is a wonderfully written song. Lyrics are short but you get the picture. And it’s haunting, which works great with the lyrics. Did I tell you he’s also a darn good guitarist? He plays all sorts of styles, from rock, country, and others that I don’t even know what labels to use. “Winding Wheel” is a pretty example of a great song with a great Dylan-esque rasp.

With that said, I still need to hear more of his music. I’ve only heard selections from Heartbreaker and Demolition, but I suspect the other ones will have a kick of freedom of expression you’ll experience in his music.
