Earlier this evening my little (well, now not so little) cousin made a big splash today at the US Swimming Olympic Trials. With a time of 48.46, Nathan Adrian qualified as the first teenager on the 2008 US Swim Team, locking down a position for the 4×100free relay. I can tell you, my aunt and uncle are pretty darn happy!

But that wasn’t where all the drama took place. To actually get into the finals to swim for a spot, a swimmer needs to swim through the heats, then swim through the semifinals, before swimming the finals the day after. So a swimmer needs to swim three times well enough to get a spot on the team (Note, this is why what Michael Phelps is doing in his quest for 8 golds is so difficult is because he needs to swim each of his individual events three times! If they were all sprint events that would be a different story, but he’s swimming a lot of 200m and 400m events, which is a lot of mileage!).

Back to the story, Nathan swims a personal best of 48.89 in his semifinals but ties for 9th place. Unfortunately 9th doesn’t get you into the finals. Then the magic begins to take place. Ryan Locte, one of the best swimmers in the world in backstroke and the individual medley, scratches from the race. Now this was likely done as a strategic move, as he was ranked 5th going into the finals. This means that Nathan is now in 8th place!

Not so fast. He tied with Alex Righi with the same time. So how does one solve this? My suggestion of having them perform in front of Simon Cowell and the other American Idol judges wouldn’t likely be internationally accepted, so they’ll have to do it the good ‘ol fashioned way: (cue the “duh-duh-duh!!” sound effect and quick camera zoom to my face) Swim-off!

A swim-off consists of having the two (or more, depending on how many swimmers end up with the contested time) compete head-to-head in the same event. With the thousands in the stands, and only a lane divider between the two of you, you can cut the tension with a knife. (Can you imagine if you tied for 8th in swimming the 1500m? I hope someone suggests my idea)

Obviously, Nathan edges out his competitor and finds a spot in the finals. With this, he’s got nothing to lose, and everything to gain. (This brings back memories of when I qualified for the BC provincials in the 100free, coming 4th in our region. Usually only the top 3 get to go, but I swam under the provincial qualifying time, opening up a spot for me. I ended up swimming under 58sec for the first in my life, and making the finals in 8th place. Lucky for my opponents, I stayed in 8th..)

So as we now all know, Nathan swims out of his mind and takes another 4 tenths off his PB, and ends up in 4th. Ladies and Gentlemen, my cousin is going to the Olympics.

Although ending up 4th means he’s not considered an alternate and will go to the Olympics, the question remains to whether Michael Phelps, who swam under 48 in the preliminary heats before dropping the race, will be selected to be part of the relay. However, as results from Athens has shown that a relay member can take part in the prelims, and NOT swim in the finals, and still get a medal in the event. We shall see…

But in any case, congrats Nathan, and may they never use my idea to decide ties in swimming! All the best on the upcoming 50 free race as well!

May holidays is upon us here in China again, but it’s not without its craziness. With the shortened holidays lots of people won’t be traveling as long, but it doesn’t mean they won’t be traveling. I think a lot of us here are expecting a lot of tourists to come into town and generally making the already crowded shopping and tourist areas, well, more crowded.

This May holiday will be even more interesting with the ongoing protests that many locals are supporting against France and, unfortunately, in turn, our regular French-based shopping paradise (for families), Carrefour. If you’ve read some of the latest news articles (here or here), it seems that a lot of people are planning on not shopping at Carrefour over the holidays to make their statement.

Chinese nationalism has been on the rise the last month or so, aptly timed before the Olympics and in face of resistance found during the Olympic Torch relays. Perhaps you might have also noticed in your MSN friend lists that some of your Mainland Chinese buddies now have a (heart icon) China at the beginning of their name. Yup, they’re related. For some interesting takes on the recent Chinese nationalistic movements, check out this link.

Usually the best things to do during May holidays is to hibernate in your home or to head out of the country. But this year, I will be heading out to Shenyang in a couple of days, traveling with a bunch of friends helping out with an event. Should be exciting going to a city that I’ve never been to before!

What are your plans for the holidays?

You’re probably not a swim fan like me, and it probably doesn’t excite you like some other sports. But I write this time since I have a vested interest in watching my cousin Nathan, who just accomplished some hefty goals these last few days!

At the Short Course Championships, held last weekend, in Manchester, England, Nathan served notice to the swimming world by going a 46.67 in the 100m free, out-touching Filippo Magnini of Italy by 0.03sec, to win the gold medal. In addition, he teamed up with three teammates to break a world record in the 400m free relay (3:08.44). So what does this mean?

1. It means he was damn fast. Filippo Magnini is no slacker, and besting this world champion is a worthy accomplishment. In fact, Nathan’s probably swimming so fast now that I would bet dolphins would be scared of racing him now. Okay, okay, maybe small dolphins.
2. He puts himself in a good position to vie for a position on the US Olympic Team. The US generally has the strongest swim team of all the nations in the world, providing depth of competition other countries would kill for. Making the Olympic team is no doubt a challenge, but this has been great experience, setting him up for a good run for the team.

Nathan, we’re proud of you! Keep it up!

Here’s more info if you’d like to read more.

Life in Shanghai includes the excitement of new additions to my friend’s families. I used to joke around with my friends in university that our get-togethers would end earlier and earlier because we’d be spending most of our time taking care of our kids. Well, that time has arrived! However, it’s quite amazing to see how each of these kids’ personalities are so evident at such a young age.

Take for instance, the little boy on the left. Logan has probably one of the kindest hearts, caring for me especially after my tonsillectomy. In fact, he was so concerned that he began mentioning my name to his parents non-stop, everyday. I haven’t seen him since, but I still get messages from his mom saying that she gets awakened by Logan calling me. Such an adorable boy.
Dylan, on the right, is a very personable kid, loves running around and hugging people. Good of you to visit Dylan!

Probably one of my closer friends, Skylar and her baby sister Sydney, are bundles of fun. Skylar has amazing interpersonal skills and is already so good at taking charge or situations. She is also a very skilled dancer and guitar player. She is absolutely adorable.

Well, it’s finally online. That’s right. My buddy T. Kao’s put a handful of his songs online for your listening pleasure.

For those gear freaks interested in knowing what we used to put together the four songs on there right now (Sunday Morning Sleeping, Beautiful World, Simple & True, and the infamous unnamed track), there were:

pieces and parts recorded in Garageband and ProTools

different guitars parts using diff. amps, Pod effects, mics, mic configurations (special thanks to J. Hsu for lending us his Martin!)

portions recorded at my place were done in my dining room and living room

synth sounds were done in Garageband and also through Propellerhead’s reason

Other sound effects that were done consisted of various ProTool plugins (including Sony Oxfords for Simple and True, and Vinyl Scratch for Sunday morning sleeping), Reason, sound bytes from different places.

It was super fun cutting my teeth with his music, because it had such variety of instruments, and found out a lot about what works and what didn’t.

I had a great time working with T. Kao with all these songs. If I wasn’t so darn busy, he would’ve been living at my place right now. I hear Mie sighing with relief.

The title above bascially summarizes the question that I’ve been thinking about for some time. I seem to enjoy writing a little bit about everything but nothing in particular. So I think I’m going to try and focus my future written thoughts on music, and music in relation to my life. Hope this gives this blog a more continuity and a little less chaos.

Had a visitor come through town last week and he’s worked his way up in the business world and made for himself a pretty good nestegg to take an early retirement. Coming out here to Shanghai to do some leadership training, he’s noticed that there’s a huge difference between how sp. homes are run here in regards to the West. There’s certainly a desperation here that the West lacks, but I also fear the East is falling into the same materialistic trap.

Just checking out new books coming out from X’n publishers I’ve been generally disappointed with the fluff they’ve been printing out. It’s a wonder to see how often the most prosperous of nations are the ones that are asleep in the light. Thanks Mr. Keith Green for that last portion of the sentence…
